Your articles

In Your Articles, members of the Generation Europe online community are invited to send in their own written articles, expressing their understanding and their views on topics ranging from human rights to unemployment, from local issues to global issues, from racism to gender inequality.

Consider yourself the next Hemmingway, Hawkins or Hardy? Want to see your work published? Submit essays to Generation Europe and it could be the first in a long line of publications before you reach the Pulitzer Prize!

Below you will find contributions from GE members on a variety of topics. The opinions expressed in the articles below are not necessarily those of Generation Europe, but provide interesting material for discussion in the forums and illustrate the pre-occupations of youth in Europe.

Social networking sites turn activists into protagonists

We live in an era of virtual communications which has brought with it challenges as well as significant advantages for NGO’s such as Amnesty International. Creativity as a Catalyst for Culture

I recently had the chance to participate in this year’s European Culture Forum which took place took place at the Flagey Arts center, a chic reconverted radio broadcasting building in Brussels.

The Headscarf Debate: Human Rights or Individual Freedom, Make Your Choice

Since France banned the Islamic headscarf and other symbols from all French state schools in 2004, the debate it sparked has resurfaced time and again over the last few years. It did so recently, at the end of June, when public schools in Antwerp decided to ban the headscarf from the first of September 2009.
Astonishingly public opinion is divided between two simplistic and inadequate positions to which adherents of either camp have pledged their unquestioning allegiance.

Henry Ekwuruke. I used to think of opportunities as something outside one’s control. A lucky break is a special chance, something that comes knocking on one’s door, a destined opportunity that no-one else can covet and so on. I waited for it to come knocking on my door or collide with me whenever time and space permitted, but it never did and if there was a knock, it was some something that brought me nothing and took me no-where.

In Defence of a European Foreign Policy

Hajar Barbach: The European Union’s international role holds a central part in current discussions on the European Constitution terms, agreed upon on 19 June. The benefits of the EU asserting itself more effectively on the global stage are increasingly clear, EU policy having become global in scope and destination; the EU indeed has the potential to be a major force in shaping world events, the total EU funding for external relations (RELEX) accounting for 55% of all international aid development assistance and some 66% of all grant aid.

On the way to nowhere...

Zane: Year 1991 marked a historical moment – the emergence of Eastern Europe. At least in geographical terms. Morally and politically these states have for a long time, and for some even today, been post-communist states. That is to say – different from other European states in terms of economy, politics, life and mentality. On the other hand, in Eastern Europe politicians talk of the reintegration in Europe, the return to Europe, meaning that we have always been a part of it, sharing the cultural heritage, having Europeans on our land...

It is Our Future

Selen Inal: With no doubt, technologies of the future will make our life easier, but there are some serious questions that we need to answer to protect the human being itself against the abuse risk of future's technology and to guarantee the social rights of people. The questions are that if people will be able to control the big power of technology or not, what will happen if a big technological gap occurs between the developed and the under developed countries, what will be the future of the environment and if people will be able to keep peace or not.
