Call for translators

Generation Europe Foundation is an NGO that produces information tools for young people in the EU. We are producing our fifth edition of the Europa diary and its teacher’s guide in 30 different editions targeted at 15-18 year olds in all EU Member States. 2.8 million copies were distributed in 2008 with the support of the European Commission.

Job description:

Translation

1. Page strips – quotes/jokes found at the bottom of diary pages. (c. 3000 words)
2. An A 5 brochure (c. 1500 words) + letter (one A4 page)
3. 100 pages of editorial (c. 500 words/page)
4. The teacher’s manual (c. 10,000 words)
5. The press kit (c. 1400 words)
6. Texts for the website (c. 2000 words)
7. Four newsletters to teachers (each 450-1600 words) (Oct, Dec, Feb, May)
8. Results of teachers’questionnaire (c. 1000 words) (June)

All texts will be sent to you (via email) in English throughout October 2008 - February 2009 and should be returned within 7 days of receipt.

The deadlines are extremely important; if you do not feel you will have the time to meet them, please do not apply for this assignment.

The candidate should:

• Have a proven track record in translation from English and ideally hold a university degree in translation/languages;
• Be able to write in a style that is appropriate for 15-18 year-olds: lively, funny, to-the-point, and not patronizing;
• Have a basic knowledge in: European affairs, environment, consumer and health issues;
• Be available between October 2008 - March 2009 (and May-June: see point 7 & 8)
• Be a perfectionist, flexible and able to respect deadlines

Conditions:

Your name will be mentioned in all editions in all languages (30 editions)
The fee is 2,500€ for the work. Payment will be as follows:
• 30% upon signature of agreement and delivery of the fist translated texts (Sept-Oct 2008).
• 30% in February 2009
• 40% at the end of the work (June)
